AX, Plug-ins, Connectors, MCP — Confusing Terms in the AI Era: Clarified in One Chart
They all seem the same, don't they? No, they're all different.

When I turn on the news, AXAt work, they say, “Plug in the connector,” and in the group chat, everyone’s going on about MCP.
To be honest, for a while, I thought all these words meant the same thing.
But when I started looking at them one by one—wow, it turned out they were all stories from different layers!
So today, I’m determined to get organized.
8 Terms Most Commonly Used Interchangeably in the Age of AI, I'll finish up with one table first, then pick out only the confusing parts and go over them in depth.
After reading this post, you'll be able to smile and answer questions like, "Is that connector an MCP?" during meetings.
✨ A quick summary in one slide—you can just save this table
Terminology | One-line definition | Remember it this way | A Common Misconception |
|---|---|---|---|
AI | All technologies that mimic human intelligence | The Biggest Umbrella | "AI = ChatGPT" (ChatGPT is a part of AI) |
Generative AI | AI That "Creates" Text, Images, and Code from Scratch | An Umbrella Inside an Umbrella | Not all AI is generative. |
LLM | Large-scale language-specific models (GPT, Claude, etc.) | The Engine of Generative AI | "Model," not "service name" |
AX | Redesigning the way we work with AI in mind | The Next Step in DX | Just because you bought an AI tool doesn't mean you're an AX |
AI Agent | An AI that plans and executes tasks on its own when given a goal | "Instead of 'answer,' use 'instead'" | It's not the same as a chatbot |
Plug-in | Extensions that add features to a program (3 types of context) | Appliances that plug into an outlet | The ChatGPT plugin has already been discontinued. |
Connector (Connect) | A feature that connects AI to external services like My Drive and Notion | AI Connectors | "New Name for the Plugin" is only half right |
MCP | The common standard (protocol) used for that connection | The USB-C of the AI world | Not the app name, but the "specification" name |
This table sums up today's findings.
Below, you can simply select the terms you're curious about—the ones that make you wonder, "Why is that?"
🤖 AI ⊃ Generative AI ⊃ LLM — A Matryoshka-Style Breakdown
These are the three words that are most often mixed together, but the relationship between them is surprisingly simple.
A small doll inside a large doll — That’s exactly how it works.
Generative AI within AI, and LLM within that
AI — The broadest category, encompassing everything from recommendation algorithms and facial recognition to navigation route calculation.
Generative AI — Among these, text, images, and music Creating something new Here. ChatGPT and Midjourney are right here.
LLM — Among generative AI systems, LanguageLarge-scale models that handle this task. GPT, Claude, and Gemini fall into this category.
So, “I heard our company has adopted AI” and “I heard our company has adopted an LLM” are statements with completely different scopes.
The first part could be anything, but the second part is quite specific.
✨ AX — "Isn't it just a matter of adding AI to DX?"
No, and that's the most interesting part.
AX (AI Transformation) is It’s not about buying AI tools; it’s about rethinking the very way we work with AI as a given. That's what I mean.
While DX changes the tool in one’s hand, AX is more about changing the role of the hand holding that tool.
DX (Digital Transformation) | AX (AI Transition) | |
|---|---|---|
Changing Things | Paper and Manual Work → Digital Tools | The very process of decision-making and execution |
Main Character | People (tools are secondary) | Human + AI (AI handles the execution as well) |
Example | Paper Approval → Electronic Approval | Electronic Approval → AI Handles Everything from Drafting to Review |
Their Relationship | AX's Foundation | This is only possible using the data accumulated through DX |
Redesigning the way we work, not just replacing tools
⭐ Chatbots vs. AI Agents — The Difference Between “Answering” and “Acting On Behalf Of”
The difference between the two comes down to a single sentence.
"Book a conference room for me." When he said that —
Chatbot: Booking a conference room Methodkindly explains it. (Answer)
Agent: Open your calendar, find an available time, and make a reservation I'll take care of it.. (Instead)
Something that was done even though I didn't ask for it, but simply told them to do it
In other words, the key to being an agent isn't eloquence, but Plan and execute on your ownIt's the ability to do that.
Once you receive a goal, you choose the appropriate tool, review the interim results, and decide on your next steps.
This is why I keep seeing the term "agentic" these days.
🔌 Plugin — The same word has three meanings depending on the context
The reason "plug-in" is particularly confusing is that a single word Three ContextsThat's because it's used for that purpose.
The third one, in particular, is a trap.
Context | Meaning | Yes | Current Status |
|---|---|---|---|
General Software | Extension modules that add features to a program | Photoshop plugins, WordPress plugins | Active duty |
Browser | Browser extensions | Chrome Extension | These days, the official term is "extension." |
ChatGPT Plugins | The feature that connected ChatGPT to external services | Introduced in March 2023 | Ending in April 2024 → Replaced by GPTs |
"Plug it in and get more features"—so far, it all means the same thing.
So, if you're searching for and reading a post titled "ChatGPT Plugin Recommendations" right now—that's an old post.
That role involves creating customized chatbots GPTs(Released in November 2023) and the one coming right after it Connector...divided it up among themselves.
🧩 Connect? Connector? And MCP — Today's Highlights
Okay, this is the hottest section right now.
Connectoris AI like ChatGPT and Claude, along with Google Drive, Notion, and Slack, such as A feature that connects my external servicesThat's the name.
The term "Connect" is sometimes used to refer to essentially the same thing.
Once you connect, the AI will find your document, read it, and summarize it for you.
So what is MCP? — It's what's used for that connection Common Specifications, that is, a protocol.
To put it another way, the connector is the "charging cable," and, MCP is a standard called USB-C That's exactly it.
Once the specifications are standardized, any AI or service can be integrated in the same way.
Point of View | What's going on? | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
November 2024 | Anthropic MCP Release | Starting with Open Standards |
March 2025 | Competitor OpenAI has also adopted MCP | Has effectively become the industry standard |
End of 2025 | As a neutral standard not owned by any specific company |
The moment standards are unified, the ecosystem explodes
Not only did competitors agree to use the same standard, but they even handed it over to a neutral foundation—that kind of scenario is really rare in this industry.
Just as USB-C helped organize our charger drawer, MCP is currently organizing the AI connectivity drawer!
📍 Real-Life Situation — When You Hear This, Here’s How to Interpret It
Finally, here’s an interpretation cheat sheet you can use right away in real conversations.
When you hear something like this | That's how you should understand it. |
|---|---|
"We need to do AX, too." | It's not about buying AI tools, but rather Business Process Redesign Story |
"Let's Automate with Agents" | Not a chatbot consultation, but A system where AI handles everything, right down to execution Story |
"Please keep the connector plugged in." | ChatGPT and Claude Link Your Drive and Notion Accountsmeaning "to do" |
"Does that support MCP?" | That service Does it connect to AI using standard specifications? Asking |
"You just have to install the plugin, right?" | Context must be checked — If it's a ChatGPT plugin, that feature doesn't exist yet |
AI, Generative AI, and LLM are like Matryoshka dolls—just remember the order of their scope
AX Is Not About Buying Tools, but About Redesigning Processes — DX Comes First
Chatbots provide answers; agents act on your behalf
ChatGPT plugins are a thing of the past—now it's all about GPTs and connectors
The connector is a cable, and the MCP is a USB-C standard
The problem wasn't that the terms were difficult; it was that everyone was using them interchangeably.
Now, whenever someone asks you, “Is the connector an MCP?”—you can simply explain it using the analogy of cables and standards.
The next time a new term comes up,
I'll be back to add a row to this table~
