binge-watching mango mukbang from Insta + I'm a Seoul-hating human being = a day trip to Daejeon
i've been visiting for about a decade, but in the last 2-3 years, Sungsimdang's weighting has gotten out of hand and I've turned around several times
for this trip, I decided to go for an open run.
🕢arrive at Daejeon Station at 7:28 a.m
a quick explanation for foreign tourists unfamiliar with Daejeon!
due to its location, it is halfway between Seoul and Busan, making it a highly accessible tourist destination for those traveling by KTX.
Without the glitz of Seoul and Busan but hot springs accessible by public transportation (yusung hot springs) and a large arboretum🌿(Hanbad Arboretum), Mountain🏔️(Bomun Mountain), Lake✨(Great Blue Lake), etc.
there are also several department stores for shopping and plenty of good restaurants and atmospheric cafes to enjoy the city's delights.
highly recommended if you're tired of the hustle and bustle of Seoul and Busan
🕢 a.m. 7:28 Sungsimdang Daejeon station Branch(with weighting)
the official opening time of Sungsimdang Daejeon Station is 7:30, but there was already a wait.
i've even seen customers already paying and leaving. what time do you open, staff?

the best way to get to Jeongdong Cultural Center is through Yeokjeon Market(The market in front of the station). here you'll find a traditional Korean market. it's not fancy, but it's full of emotion and energy.

the weighting number was 20, which was very Satisfacted.
jeongdong Cultural Temple was traveler-friendly, with storage lockers and several tables to eat at.
🕢 A.m. 7:55 Arrive at Sungsimdang head Office (no weighting)
it was 8:00 before opening time, but the store was already open and bustling with customers.
some breads already were out of stock.
as you can imagine, sungsimdang has a lot of different types of bread, and they opened earlier than the opening time, so I didn't expect them to have everything.
so I debated whether or not to open run, but there was more bread than I thought there would be.
at 8 o'clock, the bakery seems to be filled with popular and classic breads. (Bomun Mountain eco bread, matcha fried soboro bread, melon bread, onion bread, sausage bread, pollock roe baguette, etc.)
the staff is busy filling the buns, but it's best to wait until after 10o'clock, 11o'clock to buy all the breads at Sungsimdang.
fYI, the chocolate baguettes don't come out until after 9:00😂
i figured I'd be visiting several sungsimdang branch offices anyway, so I quickly paid and left before the crowds got too big.
when i checked out, there are already customers waiting for (🕢 as of 8:08 am)
don't be vague about 8:00 or go past 8:00, get there at least 10 minutes before they open!
inside the bakery, there hasn't one way path so You may retrace your steps. also take your time and think about the choice for breads until the bread coming.
🕢 8:08 AM sandwich station 🥪(no weighting)
it's not as busy as i'd expect, and there are plenty of cashiers. there are 4 or 5 checkout counters, and although not pictured, there is a rack where you can put down the bread you bought at Sungsimdang. there's also a space next to the rack where you can put your suitcase if you need to leave it for a while, so it's very traveler-friendly!
it's smaller than the main store, but it was recently remodeled, it's clean and well thought out.
i went for the French mango and yakisoba bread, but the French mango bread was out of stock! The staff told me I would have to wait 40 minutes, so I headed to the cake boutique.
🕢 8:14 AM sungsimdang Cake Boutique(30 minutes to get in)
waiting lines have formed around the cake boutique building and into the underground parking lot.
the underground parking lot also had a few layers of lines, but they were a bit long. it took 30 minutes to get in store.
if you're only going to buy rolls and cakes if you go to a shiru specialty store, the wait is shorter.
i also stopped by the cake boutique to purchase a slice of cake or other bread.
as soon as I walked in, I felt comfortable with the directions for Movement path and direction for How to.
unlike the main store, the cake boutique is too small for retrace your steps and free movement. I recommend plan ahead about what to buy for the following
of course stock isn't what I planned... i wanted to buy a slice of matcha rolls, but they were out of stock.
but my friend, who came in about 13 minutes after me, said there were several pieces of matcha rolls.
everything is luck. although you make an open run, you could miss.
some rolls, such as the pure roll, matcha roll, and yogurt roll, are limited to one per person.
the high temperature for the day was 22 degrees, so we considered whipped cream could melt. so i asked cold packsandpacking ice packs

a staff claims to last up to 7 hours and comes with 3 ice packs. there's an additional charge, but it seems minimal charge for cooler bag ($2~3). the cooler bag is very sturdy and the quillity of the ice packs($1) is awesome (full review coming soon, along with a recommendation for Breadshelf)
i stopped back at the sandwich station to buy a French mango, and when I came out it was 9:03

A baseball game was held at a nearby stadium at that day. I walked by the Sungsimdang head office at 6 p.m. before heading home, there was massive waiting line all the way to the bottom of the building next to the tteokbokki shop across the street.
conclusion
if you're going to open-run, make sure you open-run!
cake Boutique is better than Shiru branch!!!
the best route for a morning open run at the sungsimdang!
(cake Boutique-> sandwich station -> sungsimdang head office)
buy cakes and rolls from a cake boutique first (the cakes are really heavy, even without ice packs)
leave purchased cakes and rolls in the sandwich station rack and purchase sandwiches. place purchased sandwiches in the rack as well
paying for bread at the main store, then walking directly into the sandwich stop using the connected staircase to grab the cake and bread you left in the rack
in fact, if there weren't too many people, I think I could go straight from the sandwich station to the main store and buy bread, but it's a matter of conscience and I've never done it, so I doubt it.
Before concluding, if you visit Sungsimdang on weekdays, excluding Fridays, you can purchase items without waiting. Please keep in mind that Korea is a country where bread is expensive and not particularly tasty. It cannot be described as bread of Michelin Guide caliber. Sungsimdang received a blessing from the Pope for donating bread to orphanages for a long time. Visitors also do so to show respect for the way the shop operates. Of course, there are many affordable and delicious breads, and I recommend trying the cakes containing various fruits, regardless of the price.
